It’s easy to spot those in your team who have management potential
They may be a great communicator who is able to collaborate and get people on board with ease; they may seamlessly organise, prioritise and delegate smoothly; or they may have a great strategic mind that can deal with big concepts as well as the operational necessities of everyday work life.
But more than ever training budgets are being increasingly squeezed. And most employees simply cannot afford to fund their own leadership or management training.
So what next?
A logical and affordable step is an apprenticeship in leadership and management.
Apprenticeships are not just for youths fresh out of school wishing to follow technical vocations like engineering, manufacturing or construction – they are a highly attractive and valuable option for aspiring managers.
What’s more, after just seven months, the government has scrapped their controversial loan scheme (they received only 404 applicants, compared to the target of 25,000 for the 2013/14 academic year) and the cost of training for Apprentices aged 24+ is now met by the government and employers – the same as for younger Apprentices.
Arcadia Alive wholeheartedly welcomes the removal of this barrier – we think it will provide a much-needed route into management for employees who may not have done a degree but who have a wealth of experience, skill and potential to bring to a management role.
Additionally it could be argued that a management Apprenticeship is superior to a more narrow technically-focused Apprenticeship, as it can be applied across a broad range of sectors and job roles. Good managers are essential to the success of any business, so the skills gained on this Apprenticeship are transferable and valuable.
The skills provided are broad and valuable: at the basic level apprentices will learn how to effectively monitor work, give feedback, brief teams, support team members, resolve problems, procure supplies, manage projects and deliver excellent customer service. They will then go on to develop more advanced management skills to include planning and allocating the work of a team, managing conflict, resolving problems, and agreeing budgets.
Arcadia Alive is experienced at providing first class management training – we are an approved center for the Institute of Leadership and Management as well as being approved by the Skills Funding Agency to provide Apprenticeships. We are currently providing Management Apprenticeships to the rail industry and have tailored our programmes to reflect the specific challenges of this industry so that trainee Apprentices receive relevant and meaningful learning that they can instantly apply practically to their everyday job.
If you would like to engage with us about how we could do the same for you, we would love to hear from you – we can also help you with the process of getting funding from the Skills Funding Agency – please contact us today!
